INTERVIEW WITH LEICA CEO STEVEN K. LEE
Photo: Michael Agel
From electronics wholesaler giant Best Buy to Leica in Solms: since Photokina 2006, American businessman Steven K. Lee has been the new head of Leica Camera AG. Will he manage to pull the company out of a crisis which, despite its indisputable leading position in optical and mechanical technology, has almost become chronic? Lee certainly comes fully qualified. Throughout his 18-year career at IBM he demonstrated an unusual capacity to organise and perfect manufacturing processes. Lee was largely responsible for leading the development of the PC AT to success. After IBM he moved on to start up two companies, both of which became developers and providers of high-end audio studio equipment. At the Fortune 500 company Best Buy he was the man responsible for strategic orientation, as well as the development of new business models. As if his technological expertise was still in doubt, he holds several patents in optics. Finally, he is a well-informed, life-long Leica photographer and collector who, throughout our interview, produced jewels from his extensive Leica collection, which he likes to keep close at hand in his office.
From the interview:
LFI: Did you encounter any surprises when you came to Solms?
Steven K. Lee: There were plenty of surprises, three in particular: first, that no matter what the past efforts were, the core of the problem was still not completely eliminated. The second was realising that this would not be a short-term job. The third surprise, on the other hand, was discovering how resilient and passionate Leica people are and how much they want Leica to succeed, and how strongly they feel connected to the company.
(…)
LFI: What about the Leica M system?
Steven K. Lee: (…)We’ll have more Ms and more products in different categories. More lenses in different ranges, lenses at different prices. We’ll offer new and different concepts. I may get over-excited at this point and say something I shouldn’t, and I really can’t. I have to stop! (laughing). But I will say this: it’s a very exciting time at Leica.
