월드 프레스 포토를 설명하기 위해서는 우선 그 배경에 대한 언급이 필요하다. 1955년에 네덜란드에서 창립된 조직인 월드 프레스 포토 재단은 비영리 단체로 전세계 프레스 사진의 장려를 목적으로 창립 되었다. Bernhard 왕자의 후원 속에 운영되고 있는 월드 프레스 포토는 매년 저널리즘 사진들을 심사하여 분야별로 시상을 하고 있으며 최근에는 인재 육성에도 힘쓰고 있다.

2003년 대회(2002년의 사진들)에는 총 118개국에서 3,913명의 사진가들이 53,597장의 사진들을 출품했다. 이들은 2002년에 일어난 세계의 크고 작은 사건들을 보여주는 자료이자 사진 작품들로, 심사기간 2주일 동안 매우 치열한 경쟁을 통해 꼽힌 작업들이다. 방대한 사진의 틈새를 뚫고 우승하는 일은 어떻게 가능할까?

2003년 심사위원 회장인 Shahidul Alam은 가장 우선적으로 시각적인 퀄리티와 세계적인 중요성을 상징해야 한다고 설명했다. 사진가 자신이 위험을 무릅쓰고 스트레스가 극심한 상황에서 찍은 사진들 속에 오직 우수한 개인들만이 강력하고, 감동적이고, 구성이 뛰어난 사진을 만들 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 점들을 뛰어 넘어 훌륭한 뉴스 가치가 있는 사진이 되어야만 그 일년 중 가장 이슈가 되는 사진이 될 수 있다.

수상작들은 전세계를 순회하게 되는데 매년 40개국에서 100만명 이상의 관객이 찾는다. 또한 책으로 정리가 되는데 7가지 언어로 출판 되고 있다. 포토 저널리즘의 대명사로 여겨지는 퓰리처 사진들과 다른 점은 미국적인 시선에서 자유롭다는 점일 것이다.

2002년의 사진들은 위의 수상작들에서 나타나듯이 우리에게 친숙한 일류 에이전시 소속 사진가들이 많이 뽑혔다. 반면 젊은 기자들도 상을 거머쥐며 어쩌면 그들 인생에 있어서 가장 큰 상을 타게 되었고 동시에 그들의 이름을 전세계 저널리즘 사진계에 알리는 계기가 되었다. 기자들이 최고로 꼽는 상이자 가장 큰 연중 행사의 하나로, 우리나라에서는 2003년 대회에 총 29명이 출품했다(지금까지 1998년에 조계사 분규 사진으로 김재영 기자가 수상한 바 있다).
